Fight ... for your right — to Tea Party

Fight ... for your right — to Tea Party

Over the past couple of weeks, a great deal has been said about the so-called Tea Partiers. Much of it has been negative to say the least. It was interesting to me that many of the disparaging remarks have been generalizations and incorrect speculation -- passed off as matters of fact -- of why they, them, those people participated in the July 4 Frederick Take Back America rally. While I cannot speak for everyone in attendance, I can attempt to share my motivations as a participant and organizer.

It is each generation's responsibility to preserve the freedoms that our founding fathers fought for and won for us. We inherited a system of government that was so unique it enabled a country to mature like no other and usher in more advances in 200-plus years than the previous 5,000. Unfortunately, over the past century, we have been part of a culture that has slowly forgotten why those patriots pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor. They primarily did so to recapture rights and liberties that had been wrongly taken from them by a tyrant king. It is my hope that we do not allow their sacrifices to drift away in vain.

For the past five generations we have experienced a progressive usurpation of power by those who we have been chosen to represent us. So often they do it for power or money as we all have somehow come to accept and even expect. But so many times it has come from a politician or bureaucrat of "good will" who is convinced they know what is best for us little people. C.S. Lewis once said: "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
